About Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Third molars are usually reffered to as wisdom teeth. These are the last set of moalrs to come in and located all the way to the back of the mouth. very often there is inadequate room in the jaw to accomodate these teeth as they try to  erupt into the mouth. This creates a situation where its difficult to clean the area resulting in recurring pain and infections.

When wisdom teeth are impacted, they often damage the good tooth infront of it (2nd molar) resulting in the possible loss of this tooth. Wisdom teeth should be removed as soon as we have determined that they will preseent a problem.

How wisdom teeth are removed

Before the operation, the procedure will usually be explained to you and you may be asked to sign a consent form.

You'll usually be given a local anaesthetic injection to numb the area around the tooth. You'll feel some pressure just before the tooth is removed, as your dentist or oral surgeon needs to widen the tooth socket by rocking the tooth back and forth.

A small cut in the gum is sometimes necessary, and the tooth may need to be cut into smaller pieces before it's removed.

It takes anything from a few minutes to 20 minutes, or sometimes even longer, to remove a wisdom tooth.
